Vintage Voices: Chelsey from McGregor Girl Vintage

And we’re back! It’s been a few weeks since I did a Vintage Voices interview due to time restrictions and business. But I am so happy to bring it back this week with Chelsey from McGregor Girl Vintage.

I’ve been a fan of Chelsey’s online store since I began mine back in October. She’s a relative newbie at selling vintage online as well and has had her shop open for about nine months and she’s already had over 100 sales.

I love her cool, laidback photo style and her prices are affordable. I’m a huge fan of her dress section and her comfy, cozy coats and sweaters.

Find out what Chelsey had to say about living the vintage life:

Hinterland: What is your full name and where are you from?

Chelsey: Chelsey Coy (Knight is my married name), and I’m from Anaheim Hills, CA (about 10 minutes from Disneyland).

H: What do you like best about where you live?

C: Living near The Orange Circle is probably the best thing about living in Orange County. It’s a haven for vintage lovers, and the old-town atmosphere is really inspiring. I love spending the afternoons walking around with my family. I use to live in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, and loved it. It has a real artsy vibe and fabulous restaurants within walking distance. I just loved the fact that you could walk to places there, since everywhere in LA is driving distance.

H: How long have you been selling vintage clothing? How did you get involved in doing so? read more…

Black and white and red all over

2010 February 1
by hinterlandvintage

I’ll be the first to admit that I am not particularly fond of 80s fashion. Some of the crazy sweaters and sequin dresses are definitely fun, but I would rather throw on a 60s dress any day.

But while I was out shopping over the weekend, I found an amazing 80s peplum dress made by Pia Rucci that is seriously HOT. It is the one pictured to the far left and I found myself staring at it all weekend long wishing that I can somehow shrink my waistline to fit into it. For me, there is something so powerful and rock-and-roll about the black, red and white color combination. It’s cool and bold and eye-catching.

So, I went on the hunt for some more vintage pieces with the same aesthetic and tri-color palette.

I was immediately drawn to this Houndstooth Wrap Dress from Tractor Dog. I love the little pop of red at the collar. And even though this is an 80s dress, it kind of has that cute 1950s feel. $56.

And then my mind went the prep-school route and I found this adorable plaid miniskirt from This Year’s Model. It’s sweet and cute, but I can just see it vamped up for that sexy librarian look. $28

My last find was this awesome geometric belt from Little Veggie Vintage. It would be the perfect accent to wrap around the waist of a dress or to pull in an oversized sweater. $12

Inspired by photographer Erwin Olaf

I came across the above work by Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf and it took my breath away.

These photos are from his series called “Dusk” and “Dawn.”

I was so amazed by the composition of each piece. The photos in one series are staged to be the opposite in the other series. So body placement, objects, camera angles, etc. is all reversed and each photo has a kind of mirrored, otherworldly image that goes along with it.

The images make such a statement. The Dusk photos are so incredibly dark and black. They are almost difficult to see. The objects are dreary and gothic and somewhat frightening. However, in the Dawn photos, it is completely bright, with white and silver accents. The models in the Dawn series all have this pale, almost translucent skin and the objects are polished, white and clean.

There is just so much that one can discuss about this series and I love it when photos can open up a conversation like that.

Olaf’s other work is just as intriguing, so make sure to check out his Web site and catch an exhibition if you are lucky enough to be near one.

Lovely listening: Gillian Welch

There are few people who can sing with the authenticity of Gillian Welch. She does this beautiful combination of bluegrass, country and folk. It’s so incredibly lovely.

I was first introduced to her music a few months back when I saw Old Crow Medicine Show play a show in Philadelphia. She opened up for them and really blew me away.

This weekend we did a lot of driving (to and from Atlantic City to visit with my parents) and my boyfriend popped Gillian’s album into the CD player and I fell in love all over again. If I could sing (and believe me, I can’t) I would want to sound exactly like she does.

So check out the above video to see her performing “Miss Ohio” with the ridiculously-skilled guitarist David Rawlings.

Fashion fix: Giulia Borges Winter 2010

by hinterlandvintage

We often look to the big fashion shows in New York and Paris for inspiration. But down in Rio, things are definitely HOT.

I stumbled upon these photos of Giulia Borges’ Winter 2010 collection and was immediately drawn to the style and the pieces. I love the edgy structure and the shiny black fabrics mixed with some checkered patterns and pops of red. The girls all look like modern, sexy dolls.

The red lipstick was also a major reason for me loving the look of this collection so much. I now desperately need to hunt for a shade that is exactly like the one in the photos. It’s gorgeous.

The polka-dot tights are also incredibly appealing.

I’ve been nominated for a blog award!

I am having a very nice Wednesday. I woke up to my 30th Etsy sale this morning. That was a wonderful and exciting treat.

But I also found out that I am nominated in Shrimp Salad Circus’ Tops in ‘09 Awards. My blog is up for the honor in the “Other” category. I love being in that particular category because I like to think that this space is a mishmash of everything from fashion to food to art.

It is so nice to be nominated for something like this. This whole endeavor, since October, has been incredible. I’ve met amazing people along the way.

This is my very first time up for a blog award. I humbly request your vote. You can cast your vote in all categories by heading over to the Shrimp Salad Circus blog!

Wear your cake and eat it too

I have been slightly MIA from the blog recently simply due to a busy schedule and too much “Mad Men,” but this is surely worth a quick post.

Check out this cake dress made by Lukka Sigurdardottir. Yes…it is a gorgeous white dress that is completely made out of cake. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, just check out the interior photos– the cake is checkered.

I think that the Cake Boss had better watch his back. This is a crazy impressive and inspiring feat if there ever was one. And just look at how happy the model look in the photo! I think that Sigurdardottir is onto something here. Give the women what they want!

And now, all I want is a big, fluffy piece of funfetti cake with cream cheese icing. Maybe I’ll build a blouse.

Shop love: The Black Spot Books

2010 January 13
by hinterlandvintage

If you’ve been browsing around Etsy for some time, you’re probably familiar with the work of Philadelphia artist Margaux Kent and her shop The Black Spot Books. I came across her work about a year ago and I’ve been drooling over it ever since.

Margaux manages to combine everything I love in her shop. As an avid reader and writer, I relish the physical-ness of books and journals. My father read “Treasure Island” to me many times to me as a child, so her shop name immediately makes my list of favorites. And as a vintage seller, I admire her reuse of material with a history and a past that remains unknown to us.

I was instantly in awe of the stunning, original book necklaces in her shop. Each one is unique and gorgeous. They are all handmade with found leathers and hand-torn strathmore drawing paper then attached with a ring to a long chain. You can write secrets in these books and wear them around your neck. Once I have a few more dollars in my pocket I will order this one (my favorite).

But Margaux also creates equally intriguing journals, jewelry and artwork. Many of her items have an intense, haunting quality that is inexplicably captivating. They are like something out of a dream (or nightmare, depending on how you look at them). And to top it off, she also runs a vintage shop on Etsy called Plundered which features thrifted and found clothing, housewares and oddities.

And this talented artist also happens to have a talented husband. Warren Kent has an Etsy shop (just opened!) called Wandering which features his original artwork.

So please support a fellow Philadelphian and check out The Black Spot Books when you have a chance. You definitely won’t be disappointed.

Coveting Adhesif’s Fall/Winter collection

by hinterlandvintage

I keep compiling more and more reasons for wanting to pack up my things and move to Canada– endless woodlands, a kick-ass music scene and the famous maple syrup to name a few. But my latest reason is simply the gorgeousness of Adhesif Clothing.

Started by self-taught seamstress Melissa Ferreira, the Vancouver-based line repurposes vintage textiles and materials to create stunning one-of-a-kind pieces. Ferreira also tends to add on additional details by hand for an additional layer of special uniqueness.

Just check out the above images from their Fall/Winter ‘09 collection. It was inspired by ’50s socialite tea parties. The clothes have both a modern aesthetic and a vintage feel. I love the the shots and all the pieces–especially the hats!

This line is mostly found in boutiques across Canada, but for those of us living elsewhere, the designs are also sold on Etsy. Time to start saving up!

Housewares come to Hinterland!

2010 January 12
by hinterlandvintage

My love for vintage clothing and accessories really began as a love for antiques. My apartment is full of antique and mid-century finds that all have a history and a story.

I love to go thrifting for home goods and now I am bringing a few of my finds to the Etsy shop.

Yes, indeed– Hinterland Vintage is now carrying housewares.

I just made this decision a few days ago, so there are limited houseware items in the shop right now. That, however, will change rather rapidly as I go out on more shopping excursions. Believe me, I plan to find amazing, unique items that would look great in anyone’s apartment or house. It’s one of my 2010 goals.

My favorite find so far has to be this Heavy Metal horse figurine. It is made out of bronze, pewter or iron and has a gorgeous silver finish and awesome details. It would work well as a paperweight or just a prop on a shelf. Fits in with an equestrian theme quite nicely!

So if you have a chance, please feel free to browse our Housewares/Decor section frequently in the future. I hope you enjoy the new items!
